Movie Pressbook: Spaceways (1953)

I want the Spaceways plastic helmet! And remember, "You can't hide murder even in a rocket ship!" (And from IMDb's Goofs, here's a hint to watch out for: "At the beginning of the movie, when Howard Duff exits the van inside the base, the whole filming crew is reflected against the side of the van.")

Realart Pressbook: Flesh and Fantasy 1943

Realart printed 4-page pressbooks for re-releases of movies. Here's the one for Flesh and Fantasy with Edward G. Robinson and Barbara Stanwyck. It's a very good anthology movie with three supernatural tales that twist toward  their endings. Wikipedia mentions Universal shelved the original opening sequence, which was more violent and dramatic, and replaced it with a humorous one, even though preview audiences "raved about this scene." Intriguing to note, the second story involves a murder that brings to mind 1945's Dead of Night's bewildered architect and his, well, that would be telling, wouldn't it?.

Two of my favorite horror movies with all the 1950s matinee flair you could muster. I would love to see this on a midnight double bill with a Three Stooges short.

Movie Pressbook: The Neanderthal Man (1953)

Tony Rivers (Teenage Horror Factory) goes all caveman by sending us his movie pressbook scans for The Neanderthal Man. I don't know if it's the "greatest thriller-chiller since Frankenstein," but the color-in feature is cool as hell. And the overly ambitious shock-appeal marquee illustration is wild.

Movie Pressbook: The Swarm (1978) Part 1

An all-star cast couldn't generate enough buzz for this Irwin Allen disaster movie to survive its box office, but this oversized, 32 page, pressbook for The Swarm is still killer. Irwin Allen, by the way, added all those spiffy aliens to his television shows like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea because he felt it boosted ratings. Known as the Master of Disaster, his disaster movies could be rather disastrous financially, but The Towering Inferno is a good flick.

In this second part to Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie pressbook we see the ad mat pages (newsprint and poster advertisements), the coloring page (a subject  I will explore in a future post), the theater displays such as banners, flags, etc., and the always interesting exploitation ideas.
