Perils of the Wilderness (1956) Pressbook

A 15 episode serial from Columbia Pictures, Perils of the Wilderness was released when serials were on the wane, sadly. See this review for it at The Files of Jerry Blake. The serial format should be revived for movie theaters. I'm sure there's a variation of it that will work well with today's audiences. When you think of it, the format simply just moved over to television for many shows.

You Only Live Twice (1967) Pressbook

My mom and I would hit the movie theater every time a new James Bond movie was released. She had this wonderful habit of, on my birthday, leaving the presents at the edge of my bed, so when I woke up I'd have all these goodies waiting for me right then and there. One birthday was filled with James Bond coolness: the Gilbert figurines and large action figures, the Corgi Aston Martin, the creme de la creme 007 secret agent attache case, and for good measure, Mattel's Agent M Zero Radio Rifle. I was in secret agent heaven that day for sure. Oh, yeah, this pressbook is pretty cool too.

Little Tough Guys in Society (1938) Pressbook

I'm not sure how good this could be without Leo Gorcey or Huntz Hall, but here's the Dead End Kids without some of the kids. Between Universal, Warner Brothers, and Monogram, the kids did keep quite busy. It's amazing to think they started out in drama, but moved into comedy, in the various incarnations. My favorite run, overall, would be with them as The Bowery Boys.

Last of the Pony Riders (1953) Pressbook

Here's the pressbook for Gene Autry's last feature film, Last of the Pony Riders. You can thank Mr. Autry for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Here Comes Santa Claus. My favorite Gene Autry movie is, of course, The Phantom Empire.

The Cowboy and the Indians (1949) Pressbook

The old cowboy movie pressbooks are usually chock full of promotion. Being a singing cowboy sure helps, too. Take that, Buzz Lightyear! I was very lucky to find this pressbook with some of the original newspaper printing mats.  I'm not that familiar with these, but I'm guessing they would be used to make the metal plates used for typesetting the movie ad into the page or for theater heralds.

Deadly China Doll (1973) Pressbook

The Deadly China Doll pressbook is light on article information or promotional material, but it does use pictures and poster art to sell this action movie. You may remember Angela Mao from her brief appearance in Enter the Dragon. If you haven't seen her other movies, shame on you.

Forbidden Women (1948) Pressbook

The colorful and provocative cover for this 1948 movie pressbook caught my eye. I'm sure Forbidden Women was a spliced together cheapie set for drive-in consumption.  Lloyd Friedgen also released the "throbbing drama of shackled youth" Child Bride (1938). He also edited some episodes of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour (1968). Go figure.

The Naked Prey (1965) Pressbook

Cornel Wilde was a very good director as well as an actor. In The Naked Prey he uses minimal dialog and relies on the tension of the chase. In the science fiction movie, No Blade of Grass, he again explores the struggle for survival, but on a larger social scale.
