Snake Plissken didn't let a wall stop him. I saw Escape from New York in a theater in 1981. And not a multiplex theater either, but just one big screen. That's how a movie like this should be seen. Popcorn optional.

Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee should have both appeared in this movie, but the American studio backing it wanted American names. A pity, as Jack Palance is out of place here. His performance is oddly delivered (but energetic). This Amicus portmanteau entry is still a lot of creepy with Burgess Meredith stealing the spotlight. The Fright Seeds gimmick is priceless.

With a tagline like "They'll roast anybody in their path!" you can't go wrong. Here's the pressbook for Godzilla Raids Again (1955), also titled Gigantis the Fire Monster for the English dubbed (and edited) release in 1959. It was shown in a double bill with Teenagers from Outer Space or Rodan. I would have preferred seeing it with Rodan, but I admit to a fondness for Teenagers. The poster art figures prominently in the promotion, but there's a coloring contest mat and a TV trailer to "move audiences from their living-room chairs to the seats of your theatre."
In a first for really, really, really going the extra mile for promoting a movie, the exploitation page takes the grand prize for stellar idea: "local armory might be willing to lend you a sub-machine gun, bazooka, flame thrower and grenade rifle, like weapons used in the picture. Strap them on lobby board or behind a roped-off area and explain that 'These weapons are no match for Gigantis."

A large pressbook for a classic movie, The Time Machine, is packed with promotional material. From the Coppertone suntanning lotion tie-up, the coloring contest mat, a 40×60 display poster on heavy board, Dell comic book, record tie-in, and Yvette Mimieux's fasion. Whew.

Here's the Belgian pressbook for Terror of the Tongs. The striking cover, with its perfect use of white highlights, caught my eye. Christopher Lee didn't play Fu Manchu here, that would follow in 1965 with The Face of Fu Manchu.
