While I was in Newton, Massachusetts, I paid a visit to Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Home Goods to check out their Halloween decorations. I was not disappointed. Here are some pictures to whet your trick or treat appetite.

Home Depot has their Halloween 2017 into full swing. Here's the pictorial lowdown on the cool stuff you can entertain the kids with this year. Or just yourself. They outdo themselves each year with lawn decorations and animated home novelties to spice up your parties: this year? Nice skeleton T-Rex, a haunted toaster, and these little ghoulies to help you hand out candy.

You can always count on Michaels Stores to bring Halloween in early. Lots of decorations, Lemax Spooky Town, and fun wood and plaster craft items you can paint this year to showcase your Halloween mojo. Skeletons, skulls, and Day of the Dead are once again staple themes, and you can go with either a black and white motif or add splashes of color. Either way, I'm always thrilled to see their shelves filled with the creepy and the spooky. Here's a sampling of what's in store and waiting for you. The Lemax Spooky Town display wasn't up yet, but I'll be back to snag some photos for you.

Target this year is doing more animated Halloween collectibles than I've seen in the past few years. There are the usual skeletons, Gothic decorations, and tombstones, but a lively (or deadly?) mantle clock strikes the gloomy doom hour for you, and doorbell chimes put the eye on you.

Spirit Halloween comes up with nifty tableaus to exhibit their life-size decorations in. For 2016, their Halloween milieu is the cursed hotel. Last year it was the cursed subway train. Here are some highlights.

Michaels Craft Stores are always a big-deal visit for Halloween. Their focus is on the smaller, home-oriented decorations that dress up any party and decor with a retro, Gothic style. And this year is the largest selection I've seen. And of course, there's the Lemax Spooky Town Halloween Village collection, too. And they bring it all out before September! Lovely.

An astonishing array of Halloween indoor and outdoor decorations, lawn blowups, skeletons, mummies, witches, owls, and big light up screaming skulls awaits you at Home Depot this year. And a skeleton horse!

I saw these nifty Halloween goodies at the Walgreens in Crossville, Tennessee. I especially love the Frankenstein Monster, don't you? Notice the skeleton variety this year. Nothing says Halloween like a good old skeleton.

Mikestaxidermy listed this Collegeville Halloween Hobo costume on eBay. I see a lot of political correctness and social sensitivity statements and didactics on the Internet regarding the use of a "homeless" person personification for holiday dress up to panhandle candy and party with, but that's part of today's sensibilities and how we perceive things. I tried to find information on the historical background to understand why the Hobo costume has been around for generations. So far I have only found a lot of opinion and repetition of opinion.
From old photographs, one can see it was in the repertoire of self-made costumers at the very beginning of Halloween's celebration. Perhaps panhandling has something to do with it: hobos would ride the train rails and go from town to town, living a life unfettered by convenient conventions and questionable propriety, and maybe ask for a hand-out now and then. But what do you think? Are hobo costumes still relevant today and acceptable?
