Halloween Light-Ups

Universal Monsters at Target
Halloween 2017

The last time I felt this giddy, hunting for Halloween swag, was with Spencer Gifts, when they were carrying cool stuff for Halloween. You know, before they got all weird and changed their stores some years ago, dropping the monster toys and novelties. While the Universal movies may be lacking, this Halloween is a Universal Monsters feast. Target has these nifty must-haves (well, okay, I saw them and realized I must-have-them) for your Halloween haunts. For an old Universal Monsters lover like me, it was paradise. The hard to find items are the adorable Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon dolls (you can see the Mummy in the photo). Um…I mean action figures.

Halloween 2011: Halloween Totem Pole

I picked this Halloween Totem Pole up at a local old-fashioned hardware store last week. It was out front with the shiny garbage cans, new rakes, clean brooms, and other summer to fall utensils, along with a pumpkin-holding ghost and a somber witch. This one appealed to me most because it has the essential elements for a super Halloween: pumpkin, skull, black cat, and ghost. It's 32 inches high and a small light brightens up the skull for foggy Autumn evenings. Genfoam Plastics in Virginia makes this one, along with other Halloween blow molds including a modish Frankie and Dracula.

Yes, I'm old fashioned. I still like blow molds. I had a pumpkin man plastic lamp glowing orange on my nightstand every Halloween night as I grew up. Now I get to light up the whole house.

Halloween Electronic Witch Lantern

They may appear a little too happy but I still like these plastic Witch Lanterns. Though I must say I like the green-faced witch more. They make spooky sounds, too. I had a glass and metal pumpkin lantern back in the day: you know, when kids running around with glass and metal in their hands was permissable. I guess my fond memories of that potentially lethal lantern make me seek out even the plastic ones. But I do miss that sense of danger.
