Many fans of horror, amateur and professional alike, have devoted themselves to blogging about the thrills, chills, and no-frills side of the genre as seen in cinema and print. In this ongoing series that highlights the writers behind the blogs, we meet the unique personalities and talents that make the online horror scene so engaging. Up close and personal.
In this installment, Rhonny from Dollar Bin Horror tells us how her dad’s cable sports package brought the horror along with it, and the treasure found in the dollar bin.
The first time I watched anything horror was when I was four. My dad got cable for the sports package, but it also came with HBO. I would be up late watching Tales From the Crypt. No one stopped me, so I kept watching. Since then I always liked scary movies, but it didn’t become an addiction until I was 14. My dad said he got a new movie and wanted me to watch it with him. At first I thought it was another Denzel Washington movie, but thankfully it wasn’t. It was the first Saw film. After googling some information about it, I was enthralled by the fact that two young film students made it. It changed my whole perspective on horror films and my new life goal was to make them myself.
Since then my fascination with the horror genre has grown into a full-on obsession. For my birthday, Christmas–whatever–all I wanted was anything horror. My first Christmas, after moving back in with my dad, I got the whole family of Chucky dolls plus all the movies. My birthday that same year, I got two Living Dead Dolls and a bunch of films. I now am the proud owner of 16 Living Dead Dolls, the Chucky family, Billy from Saw, and over 250 horror films.
Just last year I started college to be a nurse. My dad lost his job and we are now on very hard times. It’s very rare, if ever, I get to see a new horror film in theaters or on DVD for that matter. I found a savior in my pursuit for fresh horror–well, to my eyes at least–in the dollar bin; I could still grow my horror collection while not blowing tons of money.
I grew a fondness for the old black & white, B-movie films, and while talking to some friends on Twitter, noticed I wasn’t the only broke person in the world. This is when I thought of starting a website for broke horror fans, like myself. I didn’t have money to buy a URL, so I started a blog instead and named it after my hero in horror, the dollar bin, of course.
I never thought my little ole’ blog would gain as much attention as it has, but thanks to other blogs and sites giving me exposure like The Vault of Horror, The Paradise of Horror, ObscureHorror.com, Billy Loves Stu, and many, many others listed on my blog, I’m now doing interviews, reviews, have a bunch of amazing followers and fans, and many other things I never expected, like this article right now!
I love horror and am so happy to have my little corner of it called Dollar Bin Horror.
It’s been a pleasure helping to get Rhonny’s blog out there, and it’s come a long way in just under three months! My lovely associate BJ-C’s Day of the Woman is without question the breakout new horror blog of 2009, but it looks like Dollar Bin Horror may be the breakout of 2010.
The women are taking over John, what the hell are we gonna do??
